Women's ASP Title Race Heating Up

Stephanie Gilmore, the reigning ASP World Champ, won the Movistar Classic Mancora Peru in Peru yesterday which boosted her back into the top position on the ASP Ratings. With only two events left on this year’s tour, both set to take place in Hawaii, anything could happen.

The Movistar Classic moved to a new location yesterday, from Mancora to Piscina, giving competitors a chance to compete in three to four foot swell. Stephanie Gilmore surfed consistently throughout the day, but managed to peak in the finals when it counted, and came out tops scoring the highest score of the day and taking the title.

Silvana Lima, who is incidentally lying 4th on the ratings, also had a ripper of a day, but just couldn’t seem to pull it together in the finals. Both will head to Hawaii with one common goal in mind, to …

Layne Beachley Retires

Layne Beachley, 7 x World Surfing Champ, announced last month that she is retiring from professional surfing at the end of the 2008/09 season. Although it is a massive blow to women’s surfing, it’s no surprise really as Layne has definitely put in adequate time over the last few decades, and can be stoked with her solid involvement in the growth and evolution of women’s surfing.

Layne got her first taste of life as a Pro at the young age of 16 when she made the decision to focus all her attention on the tour and competing, which back in the late Eighties was considered ‘a big thing’. She kicked off her professional career by winning her first event in 1993. By 1998 she had her first World Title under her belt, and has spent the last decade gathering a …

Fear of Life is Fear of Death: Dashenka Prochazka/Volcom Art Exhibition »

Fear of Life is Fear of Death: Dashenka Prochazka/Volcom Art Exhibition

A dark and gloomy, dilapidated basement in Shoreditch, London, played host to Volcom sponsored artist, Dashenka Prochazka’s, Fear of Life is Fear of Death Art exhibition last week. An eclectic group of curious people were visually entertained and stimulated by Dashenka’s intense and captivating interpretation of the subject , and also pumped by fresh tunes and fuelled with free drinks, Red Bull and tasty chomps – all the ingredients for a good night out.

I must admit, prior to the exhibition, I wasn’t aware that Volcom was collaborating with artists and thus I was totally unaware of the terrifyingly girlie and super skilled artist, Dashenka Prochazka. After some innocent online research, I discovered that she played base in a band called Goons of Doom, which according to a website that she was part of (called Monster Children …

Summer Sun: Friend or Foe? »

Summer Sun: Friend or Foe?

By the time summer roles around every year, we (as surfers) are generally so stoked to get some sun on our skin, some warm sand between our toes and a surf session SANS wetsuit, that we fail to remember the exact implications the sun can have on our bodies and skin, especially when we are pasty and white after a long winter indoors and under hoodies and wetsuits.

That initial summer sun burn though can be detrimental to your health, and can be the major cause of you forming skin cancer, which let’s be honest, is not all that cool. Hanging out in the sun for too long means that you get to much UV exposure, which causes DNA damage to your skin, which in turn, causes cancer. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, beating the likes of breast cancer, lung …

Ryde What? »

Ryde What?

Years back, clichéd and kitch shirts were considered cool, but then every HnM type of shop caught on and jumped onto the band wagon, and before you knew it, every second person you passed on the sidewalk was sporting a tee that shouted “I’m nobody’s bitch” or, “what are you looking at” on it. Even our blonde lady friends Paris and Madonna wore these ridiculous pieces of fashion. But soon, like anything that gets too big and commercialised, the coolness disappeared from the tee’s, and after a while it was only over-weight try hards in hot pants and roller blades rocking out in them.

What is sad though is the concept was a good one, thus fortunately for people who loved the ideas and slogan shirts from the beginning, but worried too much about their reputation to buy one from the …

Choosing a Board: Part 1

When you start surfing, its impeccable that you choose a board that is not only going to help progress your skills at a barreling rate, but also one that is suited to you, personally. Girls are different to boys, and it’s seldom we can just wonder into a shop, choose a board the seedy shop ass suggests and leave a happy customer. Oh no, there are far more factors to take into consideration for us pretty lasses when it comes down to making our first purchase. So follow these easy self evaluation tips and guidelines, and make sure you’re armed with at least a tiny bit of info before blindly wondering into a shop with your man’s credit card and images of Sofia Mulanovich charging in your head.

First up, what kind of person are you, and be honest with yourself?

For 98% of …

Nike 6.0 Goes Girlie

It is with but a warm heart and grin on my pip that I bring to you the greatest news ever, Nike 6.0 has finally released a women’s range, designed specifically for all those steezy, action women out there who are sick and tired of clunking around in boy’s sneakers. A first, the new collection compliments this season’s trend, which seems to put action sports shoes on the “highly sought after” fashion icon list.

The safest style is the Air Mogan, the true core and gem of Nike 6.0. collection. It’s tough, durable and stands true to all the core values of the Nike 6.0’s. What’s great though, is the design team have played around with some fabulous color combinations and new textures. For a shoe that will never let you down, the Air Mogan is one sneaker you’ll …

Stay in the 70’s or Make a Come Back? »

Stay in the 70’s or Make a Come Back?

Okay, so I will be the first to admit, I spend far too much money on clothes. I love them. I love to buy new stuff and wear it once and discard it. I love fashion. I love customizing my own stuff. I love dressing up smart and putting on make-up and I love having favorite items that I wear until they fall apart. But, and this is huge, it was recently brought to my attention, that this immature gesture to bring back high waisted pants and shorts, is not going away.

Basically, several days ago, I realized I only had two decent pairs of pants left in my cupboard. So, off I went, with mission and purpose stamped all over my being, in search of some black, skinny jeans. You’d think it would be easy, black is a common color, …

Bikini Body – Who Gives a Toss?

Yes, yes, I know I am a surfer and I have a certain reputation to uphold, but once in a while, I love to read Cosmopolitan and a couple of those other crappy girlie mags. It’s usually the call outs on the cover that suck me in, like, “78 never seen sex positions to try on your guy”. Then you get to the page and you’re all like, what the hell, this is lame, and yes, it gets me every time, but what can you do. So I end up with the mags and generally read them, well look at the pictures at least. Now this time of year, I love to notice, when summer seems to be knocking on the door, all the articles seem to have something to do with getting your body ready for a bikini and summer. …

Oakley’s Snow Angel Invitational »

Oakley's Snow Angel Invitational

Hosted by recent X-Games half pipe gold medallist, Gretchen Bleiler, the inaugural Snow Angel’s Invitational went down at Snowmass, Aspen, last weekend. A first of its kind, the event which was presented by Oakley, was a woman’s-only halfpipe contest, combined with a women’s pampering weekend, photo shoot opportunity for all the riders and environmental education for all those interested.

Before the final event went down on Saturday, the girls had a day to spend shooting, followed by massages, cooking lessons, workshops, etc. In typical Oakley style, nothing was done in moderation, thus all the invited riders were spoiled and pampered beyond what was expected. Gretchen hosted an environmental workshop where she appealed to her fellow riders to make more of an effort to make positive changes to our planet, and went as far to ask riders to use their fame where it …
