One of the hardest things a person will ever deal with while learning to snowboard, is mastering how to get off of a ski lift. While getting on it usually seems simple enough, we have all faced that mild panic and sheer terror the boils up inside when we approach the end and the dismount. ‘What if I face plant?’ or ‘which way am I even supposed to go if I managed to stay on my feet?’ are some of the questions you may start asking yourself, or ‘ how in the world do I get off of this thing without totally wiping out, cracking open my skull or creating a 40 person pile up?’ Although simple in theory, almost all girls (and guys for that matter), struggle to grasp the concept of effortlessly sliding off a chair lift the first couple of times….

At the moment, I’m in the infamous sunny California. This week it has averaged 80 degrees daily, no jokes. It’s really pretty outside, and well, summer-ish, which makes it awfully difficult to think about snowboarding or snow and especially about cold weather and a wind burnt faces! So, I came up 5 things to do, that might help you to get into your snowboarding mindset, regardless of the sunshine and waves!

Altitude can sometimes be the biggest battle while out in the snow. At high altitude the air is decidedly “thinner”. This is due to the decreased density of oxygen and lower air pressure. At altitude it becomes harder to ensure your body is getting all the oxygen it needs in ratio to the amount of oxygen you are using (which obviously increases when you do cardiovascular exercises like snowboarding). That is why your regular breathing is affected when you do any cardio out on the slopes, from hiking, riding to running. Your breathing intensifies, your lungs and chest burn, and breathing becomes more frequent, shallower and raspy. This is simply because your body is reacting to the decreased intake of oxygen, and is sending messages to your brain to do something about it. That is why when you have to hike a 20 yard section, run to a bus or …

It’s tough to feel one thousand percent confident driving in the snow sometimes, no matter how much you think you have prepared yourself for it. With tons of ice frozen over the roads, and a blanket of snow covering your windshield, not to mention the side winds and other crazy drivers out there, it’s pretty tricky navigating yourself up towards the mountains. Don’t be caught off guard this winter, take a look at some of these tips, and feel free to share yours with us.
I watched a program on Bridgestone Winter Driving School in Steamboat Springs, Colorado recently, and picked up a few tips that I want to share.
Anticipate turns and stops. In the snow or ice, it’s extremely slick, (as some of us have learned the hard way) so you need more than the normal stopping …

With winter literally upon us, it’s only a matter of weeks before you’re on your first snowboarding trip. Whether you’ve been before, or are a first time boarder, this article has relevance to you. When it comes to gearing up for a day on the mountain, 9 times out of 10, we mess it up. You’re either so padded up that you can’t bend down to do up your bindings, or you freeze into a sitting position on the lifts because you’re so cold. It’s seldom you’re in a happy middle ground. Don’t stress, just take this advice, and dress accordingly for the slopes this winter round.
I like to refer to it as layering, in the most non-fashion sense possible. Don’t get caught out just packing on a pile of hoodies and hope to be cosy and comfortable. Layers …

Snowboarding is about shredding, riding with your friends and progressing. It’s about having fun and exploring new places. What’s more is that it’s about being outdoors and appreciating everything nature has to offer. On that note, maybe it’s a good time to remind you about the beauty and idyllic scenery that surrounds you every time you head out to the mountains for a weekend of shredding. Next time you get off a lift, or take a time out half way through thick glades, stop, take a deep breath and take in your surroundings. There are definitely a few places that are more beautiful and user-friendly than others, so if you want to head out for a week of riding madness coupled with indescribable scenery, then try out these areas.

Conflict. That’s a word that can certainly sum up a day in a crowded surf spot. A day full of diving into gangs of beginners who don’t seem to realize the difference between swimming beaches and surfing beaches. Or that particular beaches might not be the safest places to swim, especially when you have a crowd trying to ride their own piece of a long awaited swell. I’m sure we have all experienced trying to frantically paddle our way into a wave, but then having to back pedal as we almost run over a group tourists sunbathing on their long boards. It always happens, just as you’re about to get up and start ripping it up, BAM, here comes the grandma, the grand children in floaties, their uncle, and the pet dog. It’s usually in that moment, even though the thought of drowning them and beating them with our …

The roots of surfing are connected to the ancient Hawaiian tradition of “he’e nalu”, meaning “wave-sliding”. For this ancient Hawaiian culture, the sea had an attached persona, which could somehow reflect emotions. A good day of surfing required the right waves, and in order to convince the sea to provide these waves, Ancient Hawaiians counted on priests to pray for good surf. These priests would engage in ritual chants and dances, with hopes of pleasing the sea to get surfable waves! Surfing wasn’t just a pastime. This sport served as a training exercise designed to keep chiefs in peak physical condition. Surfing served as a system of conflict resolution. People would test their skills in fierce competitions, where wealth, pride, and even romance were at stake. Has anything really changed?
Well, a lot did change upon the arrival of the white man. …
