surf boatAs a surfer girl, you’ve probably found yourself on a boat at one time or another. Let’s face it, we are a different breed. For us, a killer day is looking for the perfect wave at an offshore break, traveling between islands on an adventure, or just seeing another side of our oceans. Whether going on a sail or under motor, there are things a girl can take on a boat to make her experience that much more enjoyable. So if you’re planning a boat trip anytime soon, or know of someone going, check out this list of things to take with and take it from me, pack them!

1. Salt water soap - Those little bottles of shampoo and body wash you stole from the hotel will not work with salt water. This special soap can be used on your skin and hair at keep feeling reasonably fresh. It can be found at some surf shops and most outdoor stores. Make sure to get a brand that is environmentally friendly.

2. Closed toe shoes - Slipping on a wet deck is just bad form. And it’s easier to do than you might think. Also it’s good to know that many boat’s crew will require guests to have non-skid, non-marking soles on their shoes. It is always tempting to run around in bare feet, but this might not be the place. And as much as you love your sandals, they just won’t cut it here.

3. Foul Weather Clothes - It’s cold on the open ocean! And of course it’s wet too. Think rain gear in tropical climates and heavier still for moderate destinations. You do not want to miss a killer sunset because you were below trying to get warm. Layers work too, but a damp boat is hardly conducive to drying wet clothes.

4. Sun glasses lanyard - You watch your favorite pair of shades floating way in you boat’s wake and you will never forget this item again! The tiny price of these handy straps is well worth it. Or hijack a shoelace and make a temporary band. They might not be the most stylish thing out there, but you can ditch it when you get to land.

5. Sea sick meds - Of course you will not get sea sick! But if you do, it can ruin your trip. Seasickness is a lot like the worst flu you ever had. And it can be prevented for the most part by drinking lots of water and taking an over the counted med. Try a brand like Bonine instead of the traditional version, which can leave you drowsy. Also, taking it easy at the bar the night before is not going to hurt.

Armed with these few extra items, you can look forward to an awesome time at sea. Now get out there and enjoy the fresh salty air.
