Get Your Hair Out Of Hibernation

By Megan in Body & Mind

damaged hairWinter is not the time to hide your locks, but it is a time that they sometimes wish they could go into hiding. The cold and dryness winter inflicts on your hair can do some serious damage, and although this is the time for hats and beanies, it’s not the time to neglect what goes under them. Here are some tips to keep your hair looking beautiful and healthy through the winter months to keep it out of hibernation for the season.

Bringing Back the Shine
During the summer months, it’s not uncommon to fall into a daily washing routine when it comes to your hair, and still get away with it looking good. Now with the colder shorter days, the shine in your hair has faded, much like the sun. It might be a good idea to start using a clarifying shampoo and less often, which will keep hair more lustrous. I know that may seem gross to some of you, but the natural oils from your scalp will actually help retain the shine and luster in your hair. Sprinkle some baby powder at your roots and comb through to give freshness to your locks in between shampooing days.

Keep In the Moisture
The best way to keep moisture in your hair is to make sure that you are providing good foundation. Make sure to rinse your shampoo and conditioner out with cold water, this will help to seal the cuticle of the hair. Using a conditioner daily will also help lock in the moisture your hair needs. Whether in the shower, a leave in treatment or deep conditioner (actually all of the above wouldn’t hurt), all will assure your locks stay hydrated and less susceptible to breakage. Lightening up on the blow drying and straightening will also help prevent breakage. If you are worried about what you will look like by not styling your hair everyday, grab a hat, beanie, or scarf… you will not only be helping your hair stay out of the harsh cold air, but will be adding some fun to your wardrobe too!

Staying Trim
This one is the worst for me, but it’s something that has to be done. Keeping your ends trimmed is really important for keeping your hair in tip top shape. I tend to cut my hair maybe 2 – 3 times a year, but I have found that keeping your ends trimmed will decrease breakage and will actually help your hair stay healthier even as it gets longer. Trimming is especially important for girls with long hair, and believe me, I feel your pain, but your hair will grow back.

Use Protection
If you have to treat your hair by coloring or styling, make sure you are using the correct products the help protect and enhance your do. Shampoos and conditioners for colored hair will help your color stay truer longer and these formulas also give that extra moisture and protection treated hair needs. Serums and sprays for thermal use are awesome to help protect your hair against the damage of the blow dryer, straighteners, and curling irons, so be sure to remember these items when using heat tools.

TLC
Bottom line, the cold temperatures and brisk winds can do as much damage to our hair as it can do to our skin. This is not the time to skip conditioning or throw your hair up in a pony tail so you can’t see it. Make a little extra time in your daily grooming schedule to give your hair the attention in so desperately needs.
