Ryde What?
Years back, clichéd and kitch shirts were considered cool, but then every HnM type of shop caught on and jumped onto the band wagon, and before you knew it, every second person you passed on the sidewalk was sporting a tee that shouted “I’m nobody’s bitch” or, “what are you looking at” on it. Even our blonde lady friends Paris and Madonna wore these ridiculous pieces of fashion. But soon, like anything that gets too big and commercialised, the coolness disappeared from the tee’s, and after a while it was only over-weight try hards in hot pants and roller blades rocking out in them.
What is sad though is the concept was a good one, thus fortunately for people who loved the ideas and slogan shirts from the beginning, but worried too much about their reputation to buy one from the local grocer; several companies have managed to maintain an extraordinary edge and create funny, inspiring and unique clothing, available for a fair price. UK based David and Goliath is one of them, and The Ryde, straight out of Laguna Beach, is another.
The Ryde produce shirts inspired by surf, art and music, by two obviously excessively talented surfers, designers and artists, Mike Figueroa and Matthew Allen. Taken directly from their website, the two man team are set out to “to create a brand built around engaging, artistic designs. Their clothing is an outward expression of the way they view the world around them. The ideas that make them laugh and smile manifest themselves in their designs. The Ryde’s clothing caters to good-humored, laid-back individuals.” When browsing through the site and checking out the shirts available, one is astonished by the calibre and exquisite nature of each design, which make each individual shirt a work of art and far from a tacky slogan design. Check out their website for a better idea, and support real art.
