Our Take on the Youtube/ASP channel

By Candice in Surfing

The ASP has gone totally tech savvy on the crowd and launched an ASP channel on YouTube.

Yup, a channel. For those of you that pay attention to the ASP tour and tune into watch your favorite surfers battle it head to head in epic conditions, contest after contest, you’ll know the joys of the live webcast. It’s like real live TV. Complete with witty commentators, live interviews, ad breaks between heats and 20-second heat countdowns. It’s like being at the contest in some exotic location but without the traffic, raging crowds and sunburn.

For those of you that haven’t experienced the live webcast, you probably have a crappy computer or stuck in the dark ages with your machines version of Flash. Shame that must suck!

So, what does this mean for the average fan?

Well, those of you with average machines can now also join in on the fun for starters. This is the part where I should insert some sort of technical jargon but I slipped into a coma while researching this part of the article. I’m not one of those kids that gets excited over things like Bluetooth or 4G, hell I’m not even sure what the f%*! BluRay is. I’m just one of those people that like things to work…and fast…and not freeze frame. The cool thing about the ASP YouTube channel is that it works for just about everybody.

You also now have something even better than webcasting. You now have a whole channel dedicated to the tour. It stores clips so you can keep yourself occupied for hours. Was Kelly’s 10pt ride at Trestles really a 10?

Is Ricky Basnett really the WCT’s biggest party boy?

What does this mean for Groupies?

This does take stalker mania to all new levels. Now creepy chicks with signed posters above their beds and Taj 4EVA tattoos have an excuse to get even creepier. Yes, these people exist. They’re the type of girls that don’t know what a natural footer is but who know where Andy’s next signing’s at. Wow, that’s creepy! Hopefully hours in front of the computer screen will give them a personality disorder and we shall rid our beaches of them forever. Thanks YouTube!

What does this mean for the Pro’s?

So far Kelly’s 10pt ride in Trestles had been viewed on the ASP channel 8000 times! This just means more exposure, more fans, more ego and more sponsorship deals. Pros’ are going platinum, baby!

“I would just like to thank my board, firstly. Without it I wouldn’t be here. My amazing shaper for always getting me my boards on time. My travel Agent, for just getting me here on time. Wow, I almost forgot my clothing sponsors, for the ridiculous amount of cash and these board shorts feel so light, you guys rock! My shoe sponsors, for making each step so comfy, my watch sponsor for helping me time my heats and my sunnies sponsor for helping me through my cataracts. My energy drink sponsor, too for always giving me wings. Oh, and God, for just giving us the ocean…”

(Cue elevator type music)

“…my hot girlfriend for just looking so hot in a bikini and helping me put on my rash vest. My mom and dad…wait, does that music mean I have to get off? Oh, ok, just one last thing. Thanks YouTube for taking surfing to new commercial heights. Without you my signature key chain would never have sold platinum.”
