Conflict. That’s a word that can certainly sum up a day in a crowded surf spot. A day full of diving into gangs of beginners who don’t seem to realize the difference between swimming beaches and surfing beaches. Or that particular beaches might not be the safest places to swim, especially when you have a crowd trying to ride their own piece of a long awaited swell. I’m sure we have all experienced trying to frantically paddle our way into a wave, but then having to back pedal as we almost run over a group tourists sunbathing on their long boards. It always happens, just as you’re about to get up and start ripping it up, BAM, here comes the grandma, the grand children in floaties, their uncle, and the pet dog. It’s usually in that moment, even though the thought of drowning them and beating them with our …

The roots of surfing are connected to the ancient Hawaiian tradition of “he’e nalu”, meaning “wave-sliding”. For this ancient Hawaiian culture, the sea had an attached persona, which could somehow reflect emotions. A good day of surfing required the right waves, and in order to convince the sea to provide these waves, Ancient Hawaiians counted on priests to pray for good surf. These priests would engage in ritual chants and dances, with hopes of pleasing the sea to get surfable waves! Surfing wasn’t just a pastime. This sport served as a training exercise designed to keep chiefs in peak physical condition. Surfing served as a system of conflict resolution. People would test their skills in fierce competitions, where wealth, pride, and even romance were at stake. Has anything really changed?
Well, a lot did change upon the arrival of the white man. …

If you’re a keen surfer, a beginner surfer or someone that’s been around the block a few times but can still kick it on a long board, you will have had - or are yet to have, the moment in time when you realize surfing is a part of your soul. It’s a moment of clarity, when everything in your life and the world around you makes sense. It’s a moment in time where you realize your place on the earth, and see where you fit into this puzzle of life. More than anything, it’s a moment that defines your future, shapes your heart and your dreams, and puts you in a different category to everyone else in the world. A category that is defined by surfing and stoke, peace and love. For some, and for me in particular, it …

When you start surfing, its impeccable that you choose a board that is not only going to help progress your skills at a barreling rate, but also one that is suited to you, personally. Girls are different to boys, and it’s seldom we can just wonder into a shop, choose a board the seedy shop ass suggests and leave a happy customer. Oh no, there are far more factors to take into consideration for us pretty lasses when it comes down to making our first purchase. So follow these easy self evaluation tips and guidelines, and make sure you’re armed with at least a tiny bit of info before blindly wondering into a shop with your man’s credit card and images of Sofia Mulanovich charging in your head.
First up, what kind of person are you, and be honest with yourself?
For 98% of …

It’s March and the year has definitely started, in terms of surfing and both the WCT and WQS. Although it is still early, and only one comp has gone down with regard to each tour, each point that each surfer earns from the very start counts for something. Basically, it’s impossible to get a whiff of who is going to come out on tops, but it is a good time to check out the year’s talents, the year’s wildcards, the potential winners and also, those who came on tour with on mission and one mission only.
The opening event of the WQS, the Roxy Women’s Pro Festival, was held in Aus at Philip Island in late Jan, and saw all this seasons ‘QS riders battle it out for a podium finish. The 6 star qualifying event lucked out with near perfect conditions, …

World Longboarding Champ and fellow California, Jen Smith took top honors at the recent Banana Boat Pro held in Noosa, Queensland, Australia. The Banana Boat Pro (a women’s only longboarding event) is one of many events at the Noosa Festival of Surfing, which has been running on Aus’s Sunshine Coast for well over a decade. Originally a plain old surf compo, the festival has taken shape over the years and is now proud host of a 7 day long surf expo, displaying surfing and the surf lifestyle as it is. As well as major surf industry brands, a selection of epic live music, give-aways and surf movie premiers we available to those who visited Noosa.
The Banana Boat Pro, was fortunate enough to be graced with decent swell and waves. The final day saw decent, clean 1m waves pull through, which provided …

1. Getting barreled – if you’ve experienced the green room, you’ll know what I am talking about, if not, then make it your next goal. It’s easy and not nearly and daunting as it seems. When you take off, try paddling in from a little deeper, so it looks like you might not make it. Stand and surf down the line towards the close out, which hopefully will throw instead of crumbling. Bend your knees, lower your centre of gravity and tuck into the barrel. When starting out, run your inside hand along the wave for stability and extra stoke. It looks cool in the pics too!
2. Road trips - in search of waves with a posse of equally stoked friends. Sometimes it doesn’t even matter if you don’t get waves; it’s just the trip and the stories …
