Coco Ho: What's Going on in Hawaii?

So it is all over the internet: Coco Ho dropped in on Layne Beachley in the Final heat of the Reef Hawaiian Pro. Layne needed a ride of 6.83 to beat out Hawaiian Carissa Moore, a close friend of Coco. After being cut of by Coco, she did not get the chance to show her stuff and possibly win the contest.

Was there a conspiracy amongst the friends? Did this incident cost Layne a chance to win a contest in her retirement year? These are all issues being debated in the surf world.

The latest news is the ASP Athlete Rules & Discipline Committee reviewed video, held interviews from those present, and made a ruling. Coco will not be fined, but will be required to attend counseling on the rules and sportsmanship expected in ASP events.

Women's ASP Title Race Heating Up

Stephanie Gilmore, the reigning ASP World Champ, won the Movistar Classic Mancora Peru in Peru yesterday which boosted her back into the top position on the ASP Ratings. With only two events left on this year’s tour, both set to take place in Hawaii, anything could happen.

The Movistar Classic moved to a new location yesterday, from Mancora to Piscina, giving competitors a chance to compete in three to four foot swell. Stephanie Gilmore surfed consistently throughout the day, but managed to peak in the finals when it counted, and came out tops scoring the highest score of the day and taking the title.

Silvana Lima, who is incidentally lying 4th on the ratings, also had a ripper of a day, but just couldn’t seem to pull it together in the finals. Both will head to Hawaii with one common goal in mind, to …

Our Take on the Youtube/ASP channel

The ASP has gone totally tech savvy on the crowd and launched an ASP channel on YouTube.

Yup, a channel. For those of you that pay attention to the ASP tour and tune into watch your favorite surfers battle it head to head in epic conditions, contest after contest, you’ll know the joys of the live webcast. It’s like real live TV. Complete with witty commentators, live interviews, ad breaks between heats and 20-second heat countdowns. It’s like being at the contest in some exotic location but without the traffic, raging crowds and sunburn.

For those of you that haven’t experienced the live webcast, you probably have a crappy computer or stuck in the dark ages with your machines version of Flash. Shame that must suck!

So, what does this mean for the average fan?

Well, those of you with average machines can now also join in on the fun for starters. …

What's Happening on Tour?

It’s March and the year has definitely started, in terms of surfing and both the WCT and WQS. Although it is still early, and only one comp has gone down with regard to each tour, each point that each surfer earns from the very start counts for something. Basically, it’s impossible to get a whiff of who is going to come out on tops, but it is a good time to check out the year’s talents, the year’s wildcards, the potential winners and also, those who came on tour with on mission and one mission only.

The opening event of the WQS, the Roxy Women’s Pro Festival, was held in Aus at Philip Island in late Jan, and saw all this seasons ‘QS riders battle it out for a podium finish. The 6 star qualifying event lucked out with near perfect conditions, …
